Birmingham Home Show special guest Ati Williams has seen it all when it comes to renovations. A self-proclaimed “Renovation Ninja”, she’s a licensed general contractor, designer, and the mastermind behind Honeycomb, one of the most respected design and construction firms in San Diego and Washington, D.C.

Ati first lit up screens on HGTV’s DC Flippers, and can now be seen as one of the experts on the new Netflix series Hack My Home. The shows follows a team of experts as they renovate homes for families who need more space but aren't ready to leave their current abode or don't know how to upgrade it on their own.

Ati's love for renovation ignited 20 years ago when she bought and flipped her first home. Since then, she's been hooked -- revamping everything from minor fixes to complete overhauls. At the Birmingham Home Show on February 16 and 17, she’ll share home improvement projects that really pay off and talk about where homeowners and flippers should invest their money.

In the meantime, she answers a handful of home improvement questions for us:

Q. In your opinion, what's the most underrated tool in your toolbox?

A. Tape measure- I always think you should measure 3x to prevent silly mistakes.

Q. Best home purchase for under $100?

A. Items that make the home a smart home, such as Alexa or Google, connecting lighting or temperature.

Q. What’s your favorite paint color?

A. White. There are many shades of white, and it is a calming, serene color. I am a very colorful person, so white allows for pops of color.

Q. Favorite room in your home?

A. My bedroom- it has a giant window and lets in a lot of natural light. It is my relaxed, Zen space.

Q. What home trends are you loving? What styles do you think will emerge in the future?

A. The healing home trend. I love products that make your home feel comforting and bring healing to your space. Such as candles, scents, and plants.

Q. What is an outdated home trend you hope doesn’t come back?

A. Painted accent walls, unless it’s textural or wallpaper, or the accent as the 5th wall.
